Adoption is the legal procedure that allows a family to make a child who is not biologically their own a part of their family. Every adoption, whether foreign or domestic, requires the action and approval of a court to become final.

At the Orwin Law Office, I represent families who are adopting children because I like seeing new families come together and seeing children placed in homes where they have a bright, happy future with parents who want children very badly.  I work with several adoption agencies in Kentucky, state adoptions, foreign adoptions as well as independent or private adoptions.

As an adoption attorney, I ensure that everyone understands their rights and responsibilities and that a full and complete and final termination of the biological parental rights is made so there is no chance for any one to come back later and make a claim to a child.  I also make sure all appropriate state approvals are obtained.

Adoption relieves birth parents of the financial responsibilities they owe their children. In the past, adoption also meant birth parents relinquished the child forever without the privilege of seeing the child or being otherwise involved in the child's life. However, particularly in domestic adoptions, policies have changed and birth parents sometimes now are allowed open adoptions where they maintain contact with their children after adoption becomes final.

I also help step parents who want to adopt.  This is sometimes known as an adoption-termination, because the biological parent rights must first be terminated for the step parent can adopt the child.  Adoption-terminations are appropriate in cases where the biological parent does not want to pay child support, is not involved in the child’s life, and when the step parent is the child’s role model.  In these cases, I can help bring legal reality to the situation that already exists.

Guardianship is a good alternative for grandparents who need to take care of children on a temporary basis and in situations where an adoption can’t be done.
